Bracelet Making (Fundraiser)

Overview

necklace

After some discussion about a devastating forest fire in Alberta, students wanted to start a fundraiser to raise money and help the people of that city. We decided to make bracelets to give to the students at school who donated to the cause. The bracelets were a symbol of support and a sense of community.

Rationale (Why we are doing this?)

This activity allows students to demonstrate social responsibility by helping other communities and engage in cooperative activities. They make connections on natural disasters and ways to provide support to others.

Materials/Resources

  • string for braiding (variety of colours)
  • tape

Context and Background Knowledge

Students will need to know facts about the cause through discussions, articles and pictures. They will also need to understand the purpose of fundraising and supporting others in a time of crisis. Students will need to demonstrate patience, hand-eye coordination and organization. They will also need to know how to measure with a ruler.

Explore + Understand + Create (Key elements/Lesson Design/Format)

Background Knowledge

  • Discuss natural disasters/crisis
  • Read articles and view pictures of affected community
  • Brainstorm ways to support others and make connections to other fundraisers

Creating

  • Demonstrate the braiding steps using an iPad as a document camera
  • Students choose 3-4 colours that will complement each other in a pattern
  • Students measure their string using a ruler (about 50-60cm)
  • Top knot the strands together and use tape to hold it down on their desk
  • braiding technique to make the bracelet

Applications/Adaptations/Extensions

  • Students can use their own technique for braiding
  • Students can help each other at different stages
  • Incorporate procedural writing and write the steps for making a bracelet
